This project comprised the replacement of the four primary loops of the airport’s automated departures baggage handling system, replacement of two of the existing four Smiths Detection EDTS hold baggage screening machines and provision of new check-in desks with associated terminal upgrade works.
The main challenge was undertaking the works within a live passenger terminal, whilst ensuring minimum disruption to the Airports business operation. It was also crucial that key Stakeholder requirements were understood at all stages of the project and that their “buy-in” to the proposed terminal alterations was obtained.
The baggage system works also needed to be completed in accordance with the baggage system performance and functional design specification and in accordance with Airports operational requirements. This included coordinating the busy flight and check-in time table around check-in desk outage periods and maintaining security compliance whilst carrying out works along an airside and landside boundary.
The project works were completed ahead of schedule, within budget and without any detrimental impact to the Airport’s business critical operations.
